and New Zealand (3–5,7). We were unable to confi rm the original source of these isolates, and continuous surveillance for carbapenemase producers in our hospital has not uncovered any blaOXA-181–positive isolates since 1996. To our knowledge, there are no reports of blaOXA-181– positive isolates in Bangladesh. However, this country borders India, which is a source of blaOXA-181–positive Enterobacteriaceae. These cases highlight potential problems that may arise from medical tourism (the rapidly increasing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain health care) and document the expanding range of a newly emerging mechanism of carbapenem resistance.

Comparison of the Epidemiological Aspects of Imported Dengue Cases between Korea and Japan, 2006–2010
To compare the epidemiological characteristics of dengue cases imported by travelers or immigration in both Korea and Japan, we determined dengue incidence and related risk factors. During 2006-2010, 367 and 589 imported dengue cases were reported in Korea and Japan, respectively. In Korea, the presumptive origins for the dengue infections were Southeast Asia (82.6%), Southern Asia (13.9%), Eas...
متن کاملIdentification of Dengue Type 1 Virus (DENV-1) in Koreans Traveling Abroad
OBJECTIVES To date, no indigenous dengue virus (DENV) transmissions have been reported in Korea. However, imported dengue infections have been diagnosed in travelers returning from endemic areas. This study presents the first virological evidence of travel-associated DENV importation into South Korea. METHODS From January 2004 to June 2006, a total of 278 serum samples from 245 patients with ...
متن کاملTravel-Associated Chikungunya Cases in South Korea during 2009–2010
OBJECTIVES Chikungunya (CHIK) has been classified as a communicable disease group IV in South Korea since late 2010. Based on this, we investigated the extent of imported cases of CHIK in dengue-suspected individuals returning from dengue-endemic regions. METHODS A total of 486 dengue-suspected serum samples were screened for CHIK by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse trans...
متن کاملInternational travel of Korean children and Dengue fever: A single institutional analysis
PURPOSE Dengue fever occurs in many popular tourist destinations and is increasingly imported by returning travelers in Korea. Since Korea is not an endemic country for dengue fever, pediatricians do not usually suspect dengue fever in febrile children even with typical presentation and exposure history. This study was performed to describe the international travel experiences and dengue fever ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Climate Change and Globalization on Mosquito Vectors: Evidence from Jeju Island, South Korea on the Potential for Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus) Influxes and Survival from Vietnam Rather Than Japan
BACKGROUND Climate change affects the survival and transmission of arthropod vectors as well as the development rates of vector-borne pathogens. Increased international travel is also an important factor in the spread of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) such as dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, chikungunya, and malaria. Dengue is the most important vector-borne viral disease. An estimated 2.5 billio...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequences of Three Laboratory Strains of Dengue Virus (Serotypes 2, 3, and 4) Available in South Korea
Here, we report the complete genome sequences of three laboratory strains of dengue virus serotype-2 (DENV-2/KBPV-VR-29), -3 (DENV-3/KBPV-VR-30), and -4 (DENV-4/KBPV-VR-31) obtained from the Korea Bank for Pathogenic Viruses (http://kbpv.knrrc.or.kr). The complete genetic information presented in this study on commonly used DENV laboratory strains provides valuable information for future studies.
